Painting a bulb

I photographed a hyacinth bulb from up close and with the flash on and the photo turned out quite green, almost as if I had used photoshop. I thought the effect was rather interesting and felt like painting it. I'm not an experienced painter but I like the feeling of brushing with big strokes on paper and don't pretend to paint accurately to the original.

Met een paar dochters op de middelbare school blijven er aan het eind van het schooljaar altijd wel een paar halflege schriften over. Die gebruik ik doorgaans om een overzicht in te maken van de gelezen boeken. Wel met een leuk nieuw kaftje natuurlijk.
Deze keer ging ik weer eens aan de slag met boekbindlinnen en (spuit)verf. Ik heb het waarschijnlijk al eens eerder gezegd, maar ik hou zo van boekbindlinnen omdat je het kunt be- en verwerken als papier en het ook een canvas 'look' heeft.

My daughters in college don't always use up their exercise books, so at the end of the schoolyear there are always a few half empty exercise books left over. Usually I use them for keeping record of the books I read. Of course with a new nice cover.
This time I got going with bookbinding cloth and (spray)paint. I said it probably before but I so like bookbinding cloth because you can work on it and with it like paper and it has the look of canvas.

Ik heb het een beetje bij elkaar getrokken

door er met roze verf overheen te spuiten

en accenten met wit en zwart aan te brengen.

gelatine prints

Dinsdag had ik een gezellig knutseldagje met Marlies. Zij wilde graag het transferren met gelmedium onder de knie krijgen en ik wilde het printen met een gelatineplaat eens uitproberen. De avond ervoor had ik mijn plaat al gemaakt (met blaadjes gelatine), gewoon de aanwijzingen op de verpakking gevolgd. Dat bleek dus niet zo handig, de plaat was veel te zacht en kwam niet heelhuids uit de vorm. Toen maar weer teruggeschoven en met het stuk dat redelijk vlak was nog wat geëxperimenteerd. Toen zag ik al wat een fantastisch effect je kunt bereiken met zo'n plaat.
De volgende dag ben ik verder gegaan, met een nieuwe plaat, nu met anderhalf keer zoveel gelatine. Uiteindelijk was dat nog niet stevig genoeg, maar voordat het ding echt uit elkaar viel heb ik er heel wat prints mee kunnen maken. Eerst gewoon in de vorm en later op de achterkant, gestort op een plastic plaat. Zo'n gelatineplaat zou zes weken mee moeten kunnen (bewaard in de koelkast) maar dat hoeft voor mij nou ook weer niet.
Eerst heb ik alleen maar wat verf gecombineerd met sjablonen en later, na een welverdiende koffiepauze en het bekijken van video's van Linda Germain (koningin van de gelli-plate), heb ik wat materiaal uit de tuin gehaald (blaadjes, takjes, strootjes) en ben daarmee aan de slag gegaan. Wat een mooie prints kun je met dat materiaal maken! De detaillering was pachtig in combinatie met het nachtblauw van de verf.
Het was wel verslavend, vel na vel drukte ik (ook nog dubbelzijdig) en vaak was de tweede print nog mooier dan de eerste.
Maar ja, wat nu te doen met al dat papier? (Er is veel meer dan op de foto's te zien is.)

Tuesday I had a wonderful crafty day with Marlies. She wanted to master the technique of gelmedium transfers and I wanted to try printing with a gelatin plate. The evening before I had made my plate according to the directions on the package (with gelatin leafs). That turned out to be not that smart, because the plate was much too soft and didn't come out of the tray in one piece. I slid it back and experimented somewhat with the best piece. Then I already saw what a great effect you can achieve with a plate like that.
The next day I carried on with a new plate, now with one and a half as much gelatin as prescribed. In the end it proved to be still not sturdy enough, but before the thing totally fell apart I made a whole lot of prints with it. At first I used it in the tray and later I used the backside, planted on a plastic board. A gelatin plate could last as long as six weeks (stored in the fridge) but that isn't necessary for me.
At first I combined stencils and paint and later, after a well earned coffee break and watching some videos of Linda Germain (queen of the gelli plate), I took some material from the garden (leaves, twigs, straw) and  used that on the plate. The detailing was beautiful in combination with the night blue of the paint.
It was very addictive, piece after piece I printed (also double sided) and often the second print was even better than the first one.
But what to do with all that paper? (There's lots more than you can see on the photos.)

papiertjes

Onlangs weer eens wat papiertjes geverfd (op palmbladpapier en dun karton) en gedroogd op een wasrekje. Ik heb er nog geen bestemming voor, maar ik had behoefte aan wat donker gekleurde papiertjes in mijn papiervoorraad.

Recently I've painted some papers (palmleaf and thin cardboard) and dryed it om a washrack. I don't have a purpose for them yet, but I wanted to have some dark colored papers in my stash.
