Het is alweer even geleden dat ik met mijn oudste dochter in New York was en dit is wat ik daar gekocht heb. De boeken vond ik bij The Strand (tweedehands en reviewboeken). Omdat ze zo aangenaam geprijsd waren bleef ik maar boeken in m'n wagentje laden. Maar het tikt uiteindelijk wel aan natuurlijk. Sommige stonden op m'n verlanglijstje (Siri Hustvedt, Nicole Krauss en Jonathan Franzen) of had ik weleens over gehoord, maar The sailor's wife van Helen Benedict kocht ik puur op de titel. Het 'sailen' van de sailor speelde geen hoofdrol, behalve dan dat hij veel weg was. Maar het ging meer over het leven van zijn jonge Amerikaanse vrouw bij zijn ouders in een klein dorpje in Griekenland. Ik heb het in de vakantie gelezen en het was best aardig.
It's been a while since I was in New York with DD1 and this is what I bought. The books I picked up at The Strand (secondhand and review copies). Because they were nicely priced I kept putting them in my shopping basket. But in the end it all adds up of course. Some books were on my wishlist (Siri Hustvedt, Nicole Krauss and Jonathan Franzen) or I had heard of it, but The sailor's wife of Helen Benedict I bought just because of the title. But the 'sailing' of the sailor didn't play a huge role in the book, apart from that he was away a lot. It was mainly about the life of his young American wife, living with his parents in a very small village in Greece. I've read it while I was on holiday and rather enjoyed it.
Natuurlijk heb ik ook wat knutseldingetjes gekocht (hoewel ik totaal vergeten ben om naar The Inkpad te gaan). Bijzonder blij ben ik met de kartonnen lettersjablonen van Staples. Ik kwam ze tegen in het werk van Lynne Perrella en ben er sindsdien naar op zoek geweest. In Nederland heb ik ze nooit kunnen vinden.
Also I bought some craft supplies of course, in different shops (but missed a visit to The Inkpad). I'm thrilled with the purchase of the cardboard letterstencils at Staples. I've seen them for the first time in the work of Lynne Perrella and was on the lookout for them since. In the Netherlands I've never found them.
