Toevallige / accidental collages

Terwijl ik mijn enorme verzameling plaatjes en papiertjes aan het sorteren was, viel mijn oog soms op een toevallig bij elkaar gekomen en interessant beeld. Toegegeven, ik heb her en der een beetje geschoven om ze in fraaie rechthoeken te krijgen, maar eigenlijk hebben ze zichzelf gemaakt.

While I was sorting my enormous pile of pictures and papers, my eye sometimes fell on images that accidentally fell together and were interesting. I admit that I moved them a bit in a few places to get some nice rectangles, but they mainly made themselves.

Shrigley geprobeerd / tried

Met mijn boekbindvriendinnen probeerde ik onlangs de Shrigley binding te maken volgens de beschrijving in Handboekbinden. Dat was best leuk om te doen, totdat de band gemaakt moest worden... Toen bleek nl dat we de beschrijving niet helemaal goed hadden opgevolgd. Met als resultaat dat we papier te kort kwamen om de omslag te maken. Thuis heb ik er toen maar een draai aan gegeven door er een stuk Zaans bord aan te plakken en er een soort van sluiting aan te maken. Het geheel is nog best aardig geworden, maar als ik een serieuzer aard had gehad had ik het boekje natuurlijk helemaal opnieuw gemaakt op de juiste manier. Want de Shrigley binding is echt een heel leuke binding om losse foto's of kaarten te tonen.

With my bookbinding friends I tried to make the Shrigley binding recently according to the description in Handboekbinden. That was fun until the cover had to be made... Because then came to light that we hadn't followed the description accurately.The result was that we didn't have enough paper to make the cover. At home I gave it a swing by glueing a piece of Zaans board on it and make a kind of closure. In total it seems okay, but if I were a more serious person I would have made it all over again in the right way. Because the Shrigley is really a very nice binding to exhibit loose photos or cards.

Boekkunstbeurs revisited

Hier zie je ons (Annelies, Joke, Meia, ik), achter de tafel van Boek en Band in de Pieterskerk. Met onze themaboeken, geïnspireerd door een lied of gedicht. Mijn leporello staat rechts achter. Dit keer was mijn werkstuk best eenvoudig. Als uitgangspunt had ik foto's van huizen, genomen in Bergen, Noorwegen, afgelopen zomer. Het lied dat daar het beste bij paste was House for sale van Lucifer/Margriet Eshuijs [lied over een stel dat uit elkaar gaat]. Eigenlijk werkte ik dus in de omgekeerde volgorde. De foto's zijn vergroot, aangepast en uitgesneden zodat het geheel visueel aantrekkelijk werd. Ik heb ze zowel zwart-wit als kleur gekopieerd. De zeggingskracht werd m.i. vergroot door het werk voornamelijk in zwart-wit te laten zijn. Alleen de details komen van de kleurenkopieën. Bovendien vond ik het wel een uitdaging om nu eens zo weinig kleur te gebruiken. De man links is in mijn ogen de "stranger" uit het lied, "who will be climbing up the stairs, to the bedroom filled with memories. The ones we used to share."

That's us (Annelies, Joke, Meia, me), behind the table of Boek en Band in the Pieterskerk. With our themebooks, this year inspired by a song or a poem. My concertina is on the back on the right. This time my work was fairly simple. As a starting point I used photos of houses, taken in Bergen, Norway this summer. The song that fitted best was House for sale by a Dutch band Lucifer/Margriet Eshuijs [song about a couple that's breaking up]. So I worked the other way around, actually. The photos are enlarged, edited and cut in a visual appealing way. The work got strength in my opinion by using predominantly black and white. Only some details are from the colour copies. Besides I thought it a challenge using only a few colours.

Ik ben weer terug uit zomers Spanje in de herfst van Holland.Op deze foto zie de drie vrouwen die een berg getrotseerd hebben en niet de vijf anderen die aan het zwembad bij het hotel bleven liggen.

I'm back from summery Spain into the autumn of Holland. In this photo you see the three women who conquered a mountain and not the five others who stayed near the swimming pool of the hotel.

Onlangs heb ik mijn Google+ account verwijderd omdat ik het niet goed snapte en dus niet gebruikte en bovendien het idee had dat er dingen gedeeld werden die ik helemaal niet wilde delen. Maar nu ontdek ik dat ook mijn hele profiel van mijn blog verdwenen is. Ik haat al die gekoppelde bestanden!

Recently I removed my Google+ account because I didn't understand half of it and so I didn't use it. Above all I had the idea that things got shared that I didn't want to share. But now I discover that all of my profile on my blog has disappeared too. I hate all those connected files!

Eerste les / first lesson

Van satestokjes hebben we een bouwwerk gemaakt.  De mijne werd 'natuurlijk' weer symmetrisch. Door hem te kantelen werd hij een stuk spannender.

 

This was what I made in the first lesson. The goal was to build a 3D-structure from 2D-materials. Of course mine became symmetrical, but by tilting it, it became much more interesting.

 

Veranderd boek / Altered book

In Dutch it says: Along the coastline

Op een dag in april met stormachtig weer heb ik een strandwandeling gemaakt (iets waar ik al een hele tijd naar uitkeek). Mijn ervaringen op die dag vond ik een mooi uitgangspunt voor het veranderde boek dat ik met Meia, Wietske en Annelies zou gaan maken.
Dit boekje kwam ik in de kringloopwinkel tegen en besloot dat het heel geschikt was om te veranderen. Ik heb vrijwel alle pagina's losgesneden, met verf bewerkt en de achterkant beplakt met vloeipapier (vanwege het geluid dat het maakt). Erop geschreven staan mijn (zintuigelijke) ervaringen met het weer die dag. De pagina's heb ik vervolgens onder de naaimachine doorgehaald.
De voorkant is 'versierd' met een paar van mijn strandvondsten die dag, de achterkant beplakt met schuurpapier.
Aan het roze lintje (ook een strandvondst) kun je de pagina's (horizontaal) uit het boekje halen en zo de 'golf' bewegen. (Het loopt niet recht omdat het de afbeelding aan de andere kant volgt.)

On a stormy day in april I made a walk along the beach (something I was looking forward to for a very long time). I thought my experiences that day would be a nice starting point for the altered book I planned to make with Meia, Wietske and Annelies.
I saw this book in a secondhand shop and decided it would be perfect for altering. I cut loose almost all the pages, handled them with paint en glued tissue paper on the back (because of the sound it makes). I wrote what my senses experienced with the weather that day. The next thing I did was running them through the sewing machine. 
The front is 'embellished' with a few of my beach findings of that day. On the back I glued sandpaper.
With the pink ribbon (also a beach finding) you can pull the pages out horizontally and in that way move the 'wave'. (It doesn't follow a straight line because of the picture on the other side of the page.)

Julia's recept

In de zomervakantie heb ik eindelijk iets uit het Franse kookboek van Julia Child gemaakt: Salade Niçoise. Op zich niet heel speciaal, maar haar recept was toch net ietsje anders. Het bevatte veel stappen die ik ook precies wilde volgen. Ik merkte wel dat koken volgens een recept veel meer tijd kost, iets wat ik normaal niet doe. En ik stond ook nog onder extra druk omdat dochter #2 een vriendin te eten had gevraagd. Maar, het was lekker. We aten er Turks brood bij :-).

 

During the summerholiday I finally cooked something from the French cookbook of Julia Child: Salade Niçoise. In itself not that special, but her recipe was different from other recipes. It contained a lot of steps that I wanted to follow exactly. I'm not that used to following recipes so it took a lot of time. And I was under some pressure because daughter #2 had brought a friend for dinner. But, it tasted good. We ate it with some Turkish bread :-).
